Reigning champions Corinthians rose to third in Brazil's Serie A standings on Wednesday after a late Giovanni Augusto strike handed them a 1-0 victory over Santos.

Augusto broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute when he latched onto Cristian's pass and fired a shot past goalkeeper Vanderlei at Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo.

It was Corinthians' third straight victory in Brazil's top flight after managing just one point from their first two matches.

In Porto Alegre, Internacional rose to the top of the standings after an early Vitinho strike gave them a 1-0 victory over Atletico Paranaense.

In other matches on Wednesday, Chapecoense won 4-3 at Coritiba, Sport Recife defeated hosts Santa Cruz 1-0, Fluminense drew 1-1 at Atletico Mineiro, Cruzeiro won 1-0 at Botafogo and Figueirense notched a 1-0 home win over Sao Paulo. Endit
