13 killed, over 100 injured in Pakistan thunderstorm

At least 13 people were killed and over 100 others injured when thunderstorm and heavy rains hit Pakistani capital of Islamabad and northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, local media reported Thursday.

Samaa news reported that the thunderstorm, which hit the country on Wednesday night, also damaged many vehicles, uprooted dozens of trees and signboards in the capital.

Islamabad and its sister city Rawalpindi were the worst hit in the calamity which left eight people killed and 105 others inured.

Rescue teams said that a kid was killed and several others injured when roof of a seminary collapsed in the thunderstorm in sector F-7 of Islamabad while a mother and her two daughters lost their lives when roof of their house collapsed in Margallah town area of the federal capital.

A sister and his brother, and two other people were killed in separate roof collapse incidents in the suburbs of Islamabad.

The injured people were shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Science and Poly Clinic Hospital Islamabad.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded the wind speed to be around 120 to148 kilometers per hour during the storms in Rawalpindi and the capital.

The local administration of the capital directed workers belonging to environmental department to clear the roads of the fallen trees and signboards.

Flight operation was suspended at Islamabad airport for a brief time.

Meanwhile in the country's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, five people including two women were killed in separate incidents of house collapse.

The met office predicted more rainstorms and gusty winds in Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday. Enditem
