Juncker reiterates call for solidarity in coping with refugee crisis

Xinhua, June 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has reiterated his call for solidarity in coping with the refugee crisis, saying that the refugee crisis was a major challenge for everybody.

Addressing the 40th anniversary event of the European People's Party (EPP), the largest group in the European Parliament, in Luxembourg, on Monday, he said: "Solidarity towards refugees goes hand-in-hand with our understanding of humanity and of Europe. We must therefore once again prove, on the basis of rules to be established and without excluding anybody, that the EU is also steeped in solidarity when it comes to the refugee issue."

Juncker outlined some of the urgent challenges facing the EU, warning of the dangers of populism, and recalling the EPP's contribution to European integration.

"We should not pursue simplistic populism," he said.

The EPP is the largest political organization in Europe with 75 member-parties from 40 countries, 12 heads of state and government (EU and non-EU), and 14 European commissioners (including the Commission president). Endit
