Death toll in Ghana boat accident rises to eight, more still missing

Xinhua, May 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

Two more bodies have been recovered in the Volta River near Ghana's southern town of Yeji, where a boat disaster occurred on Sunday, bringing the death toll to eight.

The bodies of six children, all under three years old, were earlier found in the river on Sunday by a rescue team.

Traveling from Nantwekope to Yejiover with over 60 passengers on board and foodstuffs to trade, the incident occurred when the boat hit a tree trump in the river and capsized.

Confirming the incident and the death toll to local media, a local official said the boat had been overloaded.

Some survivors suggest more people may have drowned.

The rescue team is still searching for other missing passengers. Endit
