Uganda calls for peaceful resolution of South China Sea dispute

Xinhua, May 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

Uganda has called for the peaceful resolution of the South China Sea dispute through negotiations, honoring bilateral agreements and regional efforts.

Henry Okello Oryem, Uganda's minister of state for foreign affairs told Xinhua in an interview that although Uganda and Africa are far away from the disputed area, they have keen interest.

He said the parties involved in the dispute should not allow it to escalate.

"We support the South China Sea dispute related parties to solve the maritime dispute peacefully through friendly discussion or negotiation based on the agreed bilateral agreements and regional consensus," Oryem said.

He added, "We hope diplomacy and friendly negotiations will be used as means of resolving the matter."

He said instead of the Philippines unilaterally resorting to arbitration, it should continue engaging China through the bilateral agreements and working mechanisms that are there for solving such disputes. Endit
