Xinhua, May 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least two soldiers and three civilians were killed between Saturday night and Sunday morning in an attack carried out by the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebels at an army camp in North Kivu province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), local sources said.

The sources said the heavily armed assailants who came from Virunga national park, launched the attack against Katwa military camp in Nyirongongo territory at around 10 p.m. local time, and the fighting lasted for a few hours.

They added that the assailants looted foodstuffs from neighbouring villages as they fled after the attack.

Local civil society members condemned the attack and urged the Congolese army to intensify military operations against FDLR rebels who are operating from Virunga national park. Endit
