Xinhua, May 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

"X-Men: Apocalypse" is projected to top the box office during the Memorial Day weekend in North America with approximately 80 million U.S. dollars of revenue.

The superhero film based on the Marvel Comics characters of the same name is the ninth installment in the X-Men film series. It has grossed 65 million dollars for the three-day weekend, and is expected to add 15 million more on the fourth day of the holiday weekend from 4,150 theaters in North America.

The 20th Century Fox's film directed by Bryan Singer is still 30 percent behind his previous "X-Men: Days of Future Past" which gained 110 million dollars on the debut weeked.

"Alice Through the Looking Glass" ranked second with an estimated 40 million dollars during the four-day weekend.

The Disney's big-budget film lagged far behind Tim Burton's previous one "Alice in Wonderland," which opened to a stunning 116 million dollars in spring 2010.

However, The "Alice 2" got 65 million dollars on its debut overseas, earning a strong 27.1 million dollars in China.

Sony and Rovio's "The Angry Birds Movie," which entered the second week, came third with an estimated 24 million. The animated film is crossing the 225 million-dollar mark globally. Endit
