Ukraine seeks energy supplies from Iran

Xinhua, May 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

Visiting Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said here Sunday that Tehran can supply energy demands of Kiev, Tasnim news agency reported.

Ukraine can help to ensure food security in Iran, while Iran, in turn, can help to provide Ukraine's energy security, Klimkin said in an interview with Tasnim.

He ponited to the opportunities for closer ties with Iran following the implementation of Iran's nuclear deal or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), saying that Kiev is after establishing strategic ties with Tehran.

Klimkin said the lift of anti-Iran sanctions under the JCPOA has made it possible for Iranians and Ukrainians to open banking accounts in both countries, paving the way for enhancing interactions between the two countries' big and small businesses.

In a Sunday meeting with Klimkin, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also said that there are good opportunities for closer trade interaction between Iranian and Ukrainian companies in light of the JCPOA, according to the report.

The implementation of the JCPOA facilitates closer trade interaction between Iran and Ukraine's state-run and private companies, Zarif was quoted as saying.

Tehran and Kiev can launch cooperation in a broad range of fields, including higher education, scientific and technological issues, energy, power plant equipment, renewable energies, agriculture, cultural programs and tourism, he added.

He also called for Iran-Ukraine partnership within the framework of international circles in the fight against narcotics trafficking and organized crimes.

For his part, Klimkin expressed Kiev's willingness to enhance relations with Tehran in the political and economic fields through more consultations between the two countries' officials.

He also voiced Ukraine's readiness for cooperation with Iran in the power plant industry, aviation, renewable energies, nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, and student exchange programs via Iran-Ukraine joint commission on trade and economic cooperation. Endit
