Fishermen attacked by pirates near Guyana, 1 killed, 3 missing

Xinhua, May 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

A group of pirates attacked a fishing boat near Guyana on Friday night, leaving one crew member killed and another three missing, Guyanese police said on Saturday.

There were five people on board the fishing boat, including captain Seepersaud Persaud and his four crew members, when they were chased by another boat with five people armed with cutlasses.

The pirates boarded Persaud's boat, sabotaged the boat's engines, tied up the four crew members and threw Persaud into the sea.

After floating in the water for a while, Persaud was rescued by another fishing vessel.

Later, the body of one of the four crew members was found while the other three were still missing.

Police searched a fishing village on Saturday morning, where they identified the pirates' boat.

"Five men who were aboard have been arrested and are in police custody assisting the investigations," the police said.

The police said the attack had occurred in the territorial waters of Suriname and the Surinamese authorities have been informed of the incident. Endi
