New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones earlier Saturday died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen in Dallas, a northern city in the U.S. state of Texas.

According to local TV station ABC13, Dallas police said that the 23-year-old Dejean-Jones was fatally shot after breaking down the door to a Dallas apartment where a person living at was sleeping when he heard his door kicked open. The man retrieved a handgun and fired when Dejean-Jones began kicking the bedroom door.

Police arrived at the scene of the shooting at about 3:20 a.m. local time and found Dejean-Jones collapsed in an outdoor passageway. He was taken to a hospital where he died.

"There is no information that suggests" Dejean-Jones, who was not armed, knew the resident of the apartment he broke into, police said.

There is not confirmed reports that Dejean-Jones argued with his girlfriend and left on Friday night. When he returned, he went to the wrong apartment.

The Pelicans confirmed the player's death, saying in a statement that "It is with deep sadness that the Pelicans organization acknowledges the sudden passing of Bryce Dejean-Jones."

"We are devastated at the loss of this young man's life who had such a promising future ahead of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bryce's family during this difficult time," the Pelicans said.

Scott Nichols, Dejean-Jones' agent, said that Dejean-Jones' overcame a lot of obstacles to get to this point in his career. He was a joy to be around, a talent just turning the corner in his career.

Iowa State University basketball head coach Steve Prohm also said in a statement that this is a very, very sad and tragic day for everyone that's a part of the Cyclone Basketball family.

Born on August 21, 1992, Dejean-Jones signed a three-year contract with the Pelicans in February after joining the team on consecutive 10-day contracts. He started 11 of 14 games before undergoing surgery for a broken right wrist and missing the rest of the season.
