Rain halts French Open play while Serena on court

Xinhua, May 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Defending champion Serena Williams' progress against Kristina Mladenovic was halted as heavy rain poured over Roland Garros to stop seven matches on courts here on Saturday.

Serena was 6-4, 6-6 up against the No. 26 seed on Court Philippe Chatrier when a thunderstorm forced them off.

The top-seeded American, who's aiming for her 22nd Grand Slam title then has to wait to seal a place the last 16.

Meanwhile, her elder sister Venus Williams was leading another Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 2-1 on serve in her third round match on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Spaniard David Ferrer, the 11th seed in men's main draw, is up two sets and a break against the 21-seeded countryman Feliciano Lopez on Court One in the only other singles match in progress.

Before rain suspended the day seven play, Austrian sensation Dominic Thiem, the No. 13 seed in men's play, the women's No. 8 seed Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland and 12th seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain have made through to next round.

With 34 matches scheduled to play on Saturday, there're only 11 of them completed ahead of the suspension.

The continuous of play is still waiting for signals of better weather condition. Endit
