Republic of Congo opposition calls for release of political detainees

Xinhua, May 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Republic of Congo opposition parties under the coalition dubbed Republican Front for Respect of Constitutional Order and Democratic Change-Initiative for Democracy in Congo (FROCAD-IDC), on Wednesday called for the release of all political detainees.

"FROCAD-IDC calls for unconditional release of all its members who have been detained," the coalition's coordinator Charles Zacharie Bowao said when he addressed the press in the capital Brazzaville.

Some of the detainees include two former presidential candidates in the March 20, 2016 presidential elections, Andre Okombi Salissa and Gen.Jean Marie Michel Mokoko as well as Paulin Makaya who heads the United Party for Congo, an opposition party.

"FROCAD-IDC wish to reiterate its appeal for an all inclusive dialogue to end the current political crisis," Bowao said.

He hailed the recent call by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urging Brazzaville authorities to use dialogue to find a lasting solution to the post-election political crisis in the country. Endit
