Chinese stocks closed higher on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.26 percent, at 2,822.44 points.

The smaller Shenzhen index closed 0.42 percent higher at 9,826.14 points.

Turnover on the two bourses stood at 391.4 billion yuan (60.2 billion U.S. dollars), up from 371.3 billion yuan on the previous trading day.

The sectors of rare earth and non-ferrous metal gained, while the dairy industry lost.

Although the trading volume slightly improved, it will take more time for investors' confidence to be fully restored amid the bearish trend, according to Southwest Securities.

The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.91 percent to close at 2,086.01 points. Endi
