Australian banks among world's biggest companies

Australia's four largest banks have been ranked among the largest 100 companies worldwide, AAP reported on Thursday.

Australia's largest bank, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia was the highest ranked Australian company coming in at number 58, with a market value of 99.2 billion U.S. dollars.

A total of 35 Australian firms were ranked in Forbes' annual Global 2000 list, which analyses the world's 2, 000 largest public companies by sales, profits, assets and market value.

China's largest banks were listed as the world's largest.

ICBC was ranked as number 1, followed by the China Construction Bank and the Agricultural Bank of China.

Australia's other three largest banks: Westpac, ANZ and the National Australia Bank, were also listed in the top 100.

Australian telecommunications provider Telstra was ranked as the world's 262nd largest, while Wesfarmers came in at number 264.

Miner BHP Billiton also made the list at number 455. Endit
