UN chief concerned about rising political tensions in DRC

Xinhua, May 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday expressed his concern over increasing political tensions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ban called on political stakeholders of the DRC to engage constructively in a meaningful political dialogue to resolve differences.

Political tension has been rising among the Congolese political parties due to the possible postponement of the presidential elections that were scheduled to be held later this year.

On Tuesday, political bureau of the presidential majority camp in the DRC announced that it will organize a two-day peaceful march across the entire country starting on Wednesday.

The demonstration aims to show support for President Joseph Kabila following the recent Constitutional Court ruling that allowed him to continue taking the rein of the country until the presidential elections.

The march comes before the opposition protest scheduled for Thursday to denounce the same Constitutional Court ruling that supported the incumbent president.

Ban urged all parties to "exercise restraint and express their views peacefully," according to the statement. Endit
