Interview: Ex-World Bank VP says China should share development experience with Africa

Xinhua, May 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

China should not only provide funding opportunities for Africa's development but should also share its experiences with the continent, a former World Bank vice-president said on Tuesday.

Justin Yifu Lin, a former chief economist and senior vice-president at the World Bank told Xinhua on the sidelines of the 2016 African Development Bank (AfDB) annual meetings that China has valuable ideas and experiences it should share with Africa to help the continent achieve sustainable development.

"China not only can provide funding opportunity but very important China can also provide some ideas, some experiences for Africa development because 30 years ago, China was much poor than most countries in Africa and now China has become dynamic and growing on its way to become a high income country. So China provides some aspirations and valuable experiences to help Africa achieve sustainable development," he said.

Lin, who is also a Professor and Honorary Dean of the National School of Development at the Peking University underscored the important role China could play in Africa's development, adding that the two were "strategic partners."

He said the outcome of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) meeting held in South Africa last December where China pledged to provide 60 billion U.S. dollars in the coming years to support development in Africa was a great opportunity to spur the cooperation between China and Africa.

He said that Africa's development was also good for China, describing it as a win-win relationship.

Lin, who is also a member of a high-level advisory council to the president of the AfDB, said the council has held meetings about the new strategy for the bank, adding that more meetings will be held in October this year and January next year before coming up with recommendations for the bank's strategy in the coming years.

The strategy was aimed at coming up with solutions to tackle energy crisis, agriculture modernization, industrialization and climate change in order to improve the lives of people in Africa. Endit
