World No. 3 Angelique Kerber came out the first seeded player crashing out of the women's singles competition at Roland Garros after losing 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to Dutch Kiki Bertens on Tuesday.

The Australian Open champion was broken twice in the first set before losing 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to the 58th-ranked Bertens, who just won her second career title at Nuremberg on Saturday.

"I'm disappointed that I lost here the first round, but that's sport and that always can happen," said Kerber. "That was for sure not my best tennis I played today."

"I knew actually how she's playing, because I played against her in Miami. That was the first time on clay, but I know that she's a tough opponent.

"I was ready. But, yeah, at the end she make the important points," added the German, who started feeling a pain in the shoulder in the second set and admitted it's getting worse.

With the shock win, Bertens, who made the last 16 at Roland Garros two years ago, advanced to the French Open second round.

The 24-year-old next faces Italian Carnila Giorgi who ousted French wildcarder Alize Lim in straight sets. Endit
