Xinhua, May 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

More than 200 athletes and delegates from 19 countries and regions have gathered in Suva for the 2016 Oceania Weightlifting Championships, the Fijian government announced Tuesday.

Addressing the athletes and delegates at the Oceania Weightlifting Championships Congress held in Suva, Fiji's Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou said it is a special achievement for Fiji to be hosting a number of Oceania sporting events this year.

The support provided to the Rio Olympic qualifier for the Pacific's best weightlifters and the Oceania Weightlifting Championships Congress has played a big role in nation building, Tuitubou said.

"I congratulate the organizing committee of this grand occasion, which undoubtedly will take Suva by storm in the next five days with over 200 athletes and officials setting the pace for much anticipated Oceania sporting rivalry," the minister said.

A total of 25 Fijian weightlifters will take part in the championships, which ends on Saturday. Endit
