Twenty-four leading South African farmers are expected to visit Zambia this week to hold talks with government officials on the possibility of investing in the country's agriculture sector, a statement seen by Xinhua on Monday said.
The farmers, who have been organized under the auspices of Agri all Africa (AaA), have shown interest in investing in fresh produce which include wheat, maize, sugar cane and soya beans production as well as in livestock products rearing, according to the statement released by the Zambian Embassy in South Africa.
According to the statement, the farmers, who are expected to arrive in Zambia on Tuesday, will meet Zambia's agriculture minister Given Lubinda and other senior government officials on Wednesday while a meeting with President Edgar Lungu was also in the offing.
The statement added that the farmers have identified 11 countries for their investment, with Zambia pegged as number one priority because of its proximity to South Africa.
AaA is a grouping of commercial farmers in South Africa and its aim is to support the development of commercial agriculture in Africa, which it has identified as a key driver of the continent's economic development. Endit
