2nd LD Writethru: Another policeman killed in second militant attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Xinhua, May 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

In yet another attack Monday, one more policeman was killed by militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir, taking death toll to three during the day, officials said.

The attack was carried out in Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Militants today shot dead another policeman who was deployed as a security guard with a politician," a police official said. "The attack was carried out at Tengpora locality near Batmaloo in the city."

Reports said the militants also snatched service rifle of the policeman immediately after attack.

Earlier during the day, two policemen including a junior-level officer were killed at Zadibal area after militants attacked a police party in the city.

The attacks broke down the temporary calm in the capital city.

The region's indigenous militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) has claimed responsibility for the twin attacks. A Srinagar based newsgathering agency claimed, the outfit's spokesperson called its office and claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Though police and paramilitary contingents rushed to the spot to arrest assailants, so far no arrests were made.

Militants occasionally target police and paramilitary troopers in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989. However, of late Indian policemen too have been trained to fight them.

Gunfights between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.

On Saturday, five militants and a trooper were killed in a fierce gunfight in the restive region.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their Independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir. Endit
