Bolivian president demands OAS not become instrument of U.S. intervention

Xinhua, May 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bolivian President Evo Morales on Friday demanded that the Organization of American States (OAS) not become a tool of intervention by the United States.

"Secretary General Luis Almagro can't convert the OAS into a U.S. instrument of intervention. It is an act of betrayal to the Great Homeland," he wrote on his official Twitter account.

The statement followed his remarks on Thursday that lashed out at Almagro's actions against the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whose country has been embroiled in political troubles as some opposition groups are campaigning to unseat him.

Morales stressed that any U.S. intervention against Venezuela under the pretense of defending human rights will amount to "the looting of natural resources."

The OAS chief has firmly rejected criticism that he is merely a tool for U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), an accusation leveled by Maduro.

In a letter published on Wednesday on the OAS' official website, Almagro said, "I am not a CIA agent. And your lie, even if it is repeated a thousand times, will never be true." Endi
