Remains of Azerbaijani cargo plane crash victims delivered to Baku

Xinhua, May 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

The remains of the seven crew members of the Azerbaijani AN-12 freight aircraft, which crashed in Afghanistan, have been delivered to Baku, spokesman for the Silk Way Airlines told local media on Friday.

He said that the remains of the air crash victims have been transferred to the medical facility for DNA examination.

The crashed plane's black boxes have also been delivered to Azerbaijan, he said, adding that Interstate Aviation Committee in partnership with Azerbaijani experts will investigate and determine the causes of the incident.

Azerbaijan's Silk Way freight aircraft crashed in Afghanistan late on Wednesday on take-off from Camp Dwyer, a military airport in Helmand province. Seven people on board were killed in a crash. Five killed members of the nine-person crew were Azerbaijani citizens. The other two victims were Uzbek citizens. Two Ukrainian citizens have survived in the crash.

A U.S. military spokesman in Afghanistan told the Associated Press May 19 that there was "no military involvement" in the crash of a cargo plane. The spokesman said that one of the plane's wings clipped the runway as it was taking off at 2:.30 p.m. local time.

The State Civil Aviation Administration has established a commission to investigate the incident.

This is the second fatal incident involving an Azerbaijani plane in Afghanistan. On July 6, 2011, another cargo plane belonging to the Silk Way Airlines was shot down by Taliban killing nine crew members. Endit
