Asylum seeker sentenced for arson at Finnish refugee center

Xinhua, May 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Pirkanmaa District Court of Finland has sentenced an asylum seeker to one year and two months in prison for setting fire to a refugee reception center, reported local media on Friday.

The offender is a 39-year-old man who was residing in the Rautaharko reception center in Tampere, southern Finland.

In January this year, the asylum seeker allegedly ignited a fire in the break room in the basement of the reception center.

The court found the man guilty of violating public peace and sabotage, and believed the fire was threatening, even though it was extinguished quickly and there were no casualties.

The defendant was also ordered to pay nearly 340 euros (381 U.S. dollars) for the damage he caused. The court did not disclose the man's nationality.

Currently, the Rautaharko reception center accommodates a total of 120 asylum seekers. Endit
