Bangladesh has issued an alert over Cyclone Roanu that is heading towards its coastlines.

A special bulletin of Bangladesh Meteorological Department Thursday night said the storm is likely to make a landfall in Bangladesh in the next 48 hours.

Cautionary signal No. 4 in a scale of 10 has been sounded for all maritime ports, it added.

Under its influence, squally weather is continuing over the North Bay, adjoining coastal area of Bangladesh and the maritime ports.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the north bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice. They are also advised not to venture into the deep sea.

The special bulletin said the cyclone was centered about 1,365 km southwest of Bangladesh's premier Chittagong seaport, some 242 km southeast of capital Dhaka, some 1,335 km southwest of Cox's Bazar seaport, about 391 km southeast of Dhaka, and about 1,185 km southwest of Mongla port, about 178 km south of Dhaka.

It said the cyclone is likely to intensify further and move in a north-northeasterly direction.

If the cyclone follows its present course, it might hit the coast on Saturday evening, it added.

It said the maximum sustained wind speed within 54 km of the storm centre is about 62 kph rising to 88 kph in gusts/squalls. Endit
