France's quarterly unemployment rate stable at 9.9 pct

France's unemployment rate stood at 9.9 percent in the first quarter of 2016, unchanged from the fourth quarter of 2015, the national statistics bureau Insee said on Thursday.

During the January-March period, more than 2.8 million people were reported jobless on mainland France.

With the overseas departments taken into account, the quarterly jobless rate stood at 10.2 percent as in the last quarter of 2015, Insee added.

Young people aged between 15 and 24 represented the quarter's largest slice of jobseekers after reporting a 22.4 percent rise. However jobless claims of senior citizens without work fell to 6.5 percent.

Insee data showed jobless men was slightly down to 10.3 percent while the number of jobless women was stable at 9.4 percent over the period.

After breaking promises to reverse unemployment trend, the government was struggling to pass a controversial reform to to loosen the country's strictly codified labor rules to create more jobs. Endit
