Denmark commits 9 mln USD to social society fund during womens' conference

Xinhua, May 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Danish Foreign Minister Kristian Jensen on Wednesday committed 65 million Danish kroner (9 million U.S. dollars) to the civil society fund AmplifyChange that supports civil society in developing countries struggling against circumcision, abortion and child marriage.

The minister announced the commitment at the Women Deliver 2016 global conference being held here from May 16-19.

"Civil society plays an incredibly important role in the effort to promote the rights of women and girls worldwide," said Jensen.

"AmplifyChange enables women to know and fight for their rights in relation to child marriage, abortion, female circumcision and gender violence," the minister added.

Denmark is among the initiators of the fund together with the Netherlands and two U.S. private foundations, the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation and the David & Lucille Packard Foundation. Since then, countries such as Norway and the UK have also joined as contributors.

Launched by Danish Crown Princess Mary during the UN General Assembly in 2014, AmplifyChange has since its establishment approved 182 projects in 151 countries.

Denmark has so far contributed a total of 232.2 million krone to the fund, making it the largest contributor followed by the UK. (1 U.S. dollar = 6.57 Danish kroner) Endit
