The following are news highlights in major South African media outlets on Wednesday.

-- Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has called on all South Africans to protect the Treasury from "unrestrained attack", saying that reports of his imminent arrest amount to "intimidation and harassment" by law enforcement agencies and are being manufactured for ulterior motives.

Gordhan was responding in a statement on Tuesday night to reports over the weekend that he is to be arrested for "espionage" for his role in establishing an intelligence unit within the South African Revenue Service (SARS) while he was commissioner in 2007.(Business Day)
