Cambodian court summons deputy opposition leader for 2nd time over prostitution case

Xinhua, May 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Cambodian court has summoned deputy opposition leader and lawmaker Kem Sokha for the second time to question over a prostitution case after he failed to present himself at the court on Tuesday.

According to a summons signed by Phnom Penh Municipal Court's deputy prosecutor Seang Sok on Tuesday and released to the media on Wednesday, Kem Sokha, vice president of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), is summoned to appear at the court on May 26.

The summons was issued after 25-year-old hairdresser Khom Chandaraty, an alleged mistress of Kem Sokha, admitted last month of having an affair with Kem Sokha and said that Kem Sokha promised to give her 3,000 U.S. dollars, to buy her a house and to open her a shop in exchange for sex, but he had never honored his promises.

Khom Chandaraty, better known by her nickname Srey Mom, sued Kem Sokha for breach of trust and demanded a compensation of 300,000 U.S. dollars.

The alleged sex scandal between Srey Mom and Kem Sokha came to light in February for leaked audio clips of telephone conversation between them. In the clips, they discussed sex, pregnancy and paying for an apartment.

Since the scandal broke out, Kem Sokha has not publicly commented on the veracity of the audio recordings; instead, he advised supporters not to react to provocations. Endit
