Angulo hands Independiente edge over Pumas in Libertadores quarters

Xinhua, May 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Jose Angulo scored either side of halftime to fire Ecuador's Independiente del Valle to a 2-1 victory over Pumas UNAM of Mexico in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores quarterfinal on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old striker opened the scoring by controlling Junior Sornoza's floating diagonal pass with his chest before firing a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Miguel Palacios.

He doubled the hosts' lead just before the hour mark at the Estadio Olimpico by heading in Luis Ayala's cross.

Second-half substitute Fidel Martinez gave his side late hope by meeting Christian Nunez's headed cross with a powerful first-time finish with his left foot.

But Independiente held on and they need only a draw in Tuesday's return leg in Mexico City to progress to the semifinals of Latin America's top club competition. Endit
