The Chinese Embassy in Zambia on Tuesday launched an English version of a book documenting the history of the construction of the Tanzania Zambia Railway, a joint project by the Zambian and Tanzanian governments.
A Monument to China Africa Friendship is a first-hand account of the building of the railway line, built in the 1970s with financial and technical assistance of the Chinese government.
The launch of the English version follows the compiling and publication of the Chinese version by the Department of Policy Planning of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2015.
Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Yang Youming said during the launch of the book that the three partners in the project have agreed to revamp the railway line which has been facing operational challenges as it could not be allowed to collapse.
"We shall not allow TAZARA to degenerate and we should do everything possible to revive it," he said.
The Chinese envoy noted that officials from the three governments met last week in Tanzania and had a fruitful discussion on the revitalization of the railway line so that it could promote socio economic development in the two countries.
According to him, the railway line represents the everlasting friendship between the Chinese and African people and was an "enduring monument" in the history of Sino-Africa relations.
The launch of the book, he added, was to carry forward the TAZARA spirit so as to promote a better and faster development of China Africa relationship in this age.
Director-general of the Department of Policy Planning of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Wang Yajun said the book was a comprehensive reflection of the construction of the railway line and a symbol of the long lasting relation with China.
Zambia's former Foreign Affairs Minister Vernon Mwaanga paid tribute to thousands of workers from the three countries who worked hard and diligently to ensure the construction of the railway line. Endit
