Hamas, Abbas welcome Sisi's remarks on Palestinian reconciliation

Xinhua, May 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Islamic Hamas movement welcomed on Tuesday the remarks of Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi on internal Palestinian reconciliation.

Earlier on Tuesday, Sisi called on the Palestinian factions to reunite and achieve their internal reconciliation, adding that Egypt is willing to play a role that contributes in resolving the ongoing internal Palestinian split.

Abbas said in a statement published by WAFA news agency that the Palestinians welcome Sisi's remarks on achieving the Palestinian unity and also his remarks on exerting more efforts to achieve peace and establish a Palestinian state.

Meanwhile, Islamic Hamas movement welcomed the statements of Sisi on pushing forward to end the internal Palestinian split.

Egypt has been sponsoring the internal Palestinian reconciliation and brought the two rivals' leaders, Hamas and Abbas' Fatah Party, to Cairo for dialogue, since the start of the Palestinian split in 2007.

However, the role of Egypt in sponsoring the reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas declined following Hamas' support to former Islamic President of Egypt Mohamed Morsi, who was ousted in 2013. Endit
