Determined efforts needed to solve Syria conflict: Kerry

Xinhua, May 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called Tuesday for determined efforts in solving the conflict in Syria in the face of difficulties hindering a full ceasefire.

Kerry made the remarks at a press conference here after an international meeting on Syria. Under the co-chairship of the United States and Russia, the fifth International Syria Support Group (ISSG) met Tuesday to discuss enhancing a nationwide cessation of hostilities and increasing humanitarian aid to Syria.

"No one is satisfied with the current situation in Syria... There is a lot of work to do," Kerry told reporters, adding it was hard to bring about a real ceasefire in Syria despite consistent international efforts.

"We have a framework for peace. The biggest challenge we have now is the put-in-place of the plan," he said.

The diplomat noted that continued conflict in Syria, which also leads to a large number of migrants fleeing the country, was harmful for everyone.

Determined efforts are needed to achieve a full ceasefire, and competing interests in the region must be put to one side to undergo a peaceful political transition in Syria, Kerry added. Endit
