Bulgaria launches concession procedure for Sofia Airport

Xinhua, May 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian government on Tuesday opened a procedure for granting a concession for Sofia Airport for a period of 35 years, officials said.

The aim was to attract private investors in the development of airport infrastructure and optimization of airport services, the government said in a statement.

The concession would help the airport reach international standards, transfer management know-how, generate traffic and develop commercial activities in the region, the statement said.

Sofia Airport is the largest airport in Bulgaria. In 2015, the airport serviced a total of 44,416 aircraft and 4.06 million passengers, and processed 16,740 tons of freight, official data show.

Since 2005, Bulgaria signed concession contracts for the Black Sea airports at Varna and Burgas, and several small port terminals at the Black Sea and the Danube River.

Frankfurt Airport was the only foreign investor, while the rest were Bulgarian companies. The concession terms were between 22 and 35 years. Endit
