Eastring Pipeline Project to strengthen Slovakia's energy security: official

Xinhua, May 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Eastring gas pipeline project, which is set to connect Slovakia with the Balkans, will strengthen the country's energy security, announced Slovak Economy Minister Peter Ziga on Monday.

"We find the Eastring project to be the best one to resolve the lacking interconnection in the direction of southeastern Europe... and, naturally, also in the opposite direction. If there are any problems with gas supplies, we'll be able to deliver any commodity in our direction from other than Russian sources," stressed Ziga.

Ziga pointed to the fact that in November 2015 the Eastring gas pipeline made it onto the list of projects with the status of so-called projects of common interest (PCIs) of the European Commission.

"I think that the necessary negotiations will continue, like the work concerning the initial stages of the project," added Ziga.

Eastring's budget ranges between 1.5-2 billion euros (1.7-2.3 billion U.S. Dollars). Its technical capacity in the initial stage of the project is 20 billion cubic meters, to be expanded to 40 billion cubic meters in the final stage. Depending on the final decision on its route, the pipeline's length should range between 744-1,015 kilometres. Endit
