Iran in talks with Russia to buy naval hardware: commander

Xinhua, May 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Iran is negotiating with Russia to buy naval hardware from its northern neighbor, Iran's navy lieutenant commander, admiral Gholam Reza Biqam, told Tasnim news agency on Sunday.

The Iranian navy has informed Russia of its demand for certain naval equipment, particularly for marine rescue and relief, Biqam was quoted as saying.

The Iranian and Russian defense ministries are currently in talks to conclude the agreement, he added.

Also, the Iranian commander said that the Caspian Sea littoral states are moving to finalize an agreement on holding a joint naval war game, with the purpose of strengthening ties.

In July 2015, navy commanders of Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan held a gathering in Russian city of Saint Petersburg and drafted a cooperation agreement ruling out any outsider's role for security in the Caspian Sea. Endit
