UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Johnson Mogoa Kimani Ondieki of Kenya as the Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS).

Lieutenant General Ondieki will replace Lieutenant General Yohannes Gebremeskel Tesfamariam of Ethiopia, who will complete his assignment on June 17, 2016, said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric at the noon briefing.(UN-South Sudan-Appointment)

OTTAWA -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced that he will pay a working visit to Japan on May 23-25 and participate in the G7 Leaders' Summit on May 26 and 27 in the country.

During his visit in Japan, Trudeau will have an audience with the Emperor and Empress of Japan, and will meet with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He will also meet with leaders in the automotive sector to discuss ways to further promote trade and investment between Canada and Japan. (Canada-Japan-Visit)

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Navy has fired the commander of the 10 U.S. sailors who were detained by Iran for about 15 hours after drifting into Iranian territorial waters early this year.

According to a Navy statement released Thursday, U.S. Navy Commander Eric Rasch was relieved of his duties as commanding officer of Coastal Riverine Squadron 3 as of May 12. (U.S.-Iran-Navy)

HELSINKI -- The Central Finland District Court has sentenced a man to three and a half years in prison for throwing petrol bombs at a refugee reception center, reported Finnish national broadcaster Yle on Friday.
