Austrian rail head likely next chancellor: media

Xinhua, May 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Christian Kern, chief of Austria's state railways, is likely to be nominated as the country's next chancellor, Austrian public service broadcaster ORF reported Thursday.

Kern, 50, became the chief of Austria's railway operator OBB in 2010, and he is likely to be new chief of the Social Democratic Party (SPO) and nominated as the Austrian chancellor, with reportedly overwhelming support from the party.

On Monday, Werner Faymann resigned from the positions of both the Austrian chancellor and the chief of SPO, saying support from within his party was insufficient.

The ruling SPO and coalition parter People's Party (OVP) lost the presidential election held last month, with their candidates failing to enter the second round set for May 22. Endit
