Nigeria to impound vehicles with expired tyres

Xinhua, May 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Nigerian government on Thursday said it would from next week impound vehicles with expired tyres across the country.

Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Boboye Oyeyemi made this known at a capacity development workshop in southeast city of Enugu.

"We have a major problem in our hands. Our management team will be in the field next week to enforce the ban on usage of expired tyres on our roads," he added.

He said usage of expired tyres and speeding were among the most significant challenges in traffic management in the country.

According to him, the rising rate of road crashes is alarming, noting that more than 90 percent of such incidents, between Feb. 9 and April 7, were as a result of tyre burst.

Oyeyemi added that the commission would also embark on sensitization of motorists on the dangers of using expired tyres, saying that the step was part of the efforts to minimize road crashes.

Road accidents take place frequently in Nigeria due to reckless driving, bad road conditions and over packing. More than 1,000 are killed on the road each year in the country. Endit
