Besieged city near Damascus to receive first batch of aid since 2012

Xinhua, May 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Aid convoys planned to enter Daraya, a besieged city west of the Syrian capital Damascus on Thursday, the first batch of aid to the troubled area since 2012, a humanitarian worker told Xinhua.

The aid convoys are on the way to Daraya, but the entry time is not yet clear, the worker said on condition of anonymity.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which says it relies on a network of activists on the ground inside Syria, said the convoys will be under the supervision of the Red Cross and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.

Daraya was among the first cities to fall in the quagmire of war at the beginning of the five-year-old conflict.

Like in any other rebel-held area near sensitive positions, the Syrian army has imposed a siege to the city, preventing people from entering or leaving. Endit
