Four Tunisian national guard agents were killed in an armed confrontation that ended with a suicide-bomber explosion in the southern region of Tataouine, south of Tunisia, on Thursday, according to the Interior Ministry.

In the desert area of Sommar in Tataouine, security forces were chasing a group of armed militants following intelligence collected, an official source told Xinhua.

After the national guard killed one of the extremists, another one blew his explosive belt which resulted in the death of four officers, he added.

"According to precise intelligence about suspicious movements within the Sommar area in Tataouine, National Guard units rushed to the location where a group of extremists were hiding in one of the abandoned houses," reads the statement issued by the ministry.

According to an official source, this suicide attack is connected to the security operation led by police this morning in the north suburb of the capital Tunis, which resulted in two extremists killed and 16 suspects arrested. Endit
