Asian champions Guangzhou Evergrande beat second-tier Hohhot Zhongyou 2-0 in the third round of the Chinese Football Association (CFA) Cup here on Wednesday.
The flying dust caused great trouble for both sides and the 30,000-plus audiences. After a scoreless first half, Evergrande broke the ice on a free-kick in the 83rd minute, as Yu Hanchao's header went through Zhouyou goalkeeper Han Fangteng's fingers. In the injury time, Alan sealed the victory by putting Goulart's pass into an empty net.
Evergrande's head coach Scolari admitted the difficulty of the match. "The win shall be set in the first minute, but Goulart's shot was stopped. We missed at least three to four opportunities in the first half, and that gave the opponents more confidence," he said.
"The game was in our hand after we broke the ice, but we still need to improve," he added.
Zhongyou's coach Wang Bo was satisfied with his players' performance.
"This is a rare opportunity for us to learn from Guangzhou Evergrande, and our players caused great trouble to them. We harvest confidence by competing with these top players and I believe that we will do better in the future," he said.
Guangzhou Evergrande will face Tianjin Teda in the next round. Endit
