Portugal's transport authority says Uber service illegal

Xinhua, May 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Portugal's transport authority said on Wednesday that car-sharing service Uber was illegal, according to local media reports.

The president of the authority, Joao Cavalho, pointed out at parliament that the car-sharing service should comply with the court's decision for Uber to halt its activities.

Taxi drivers and Uber have been fighting a battle in court. Recently, thousands of taxi drivers protested against Uber in the Portuguese capital, insisting their services amounted to unfair competition.

A manifesto was handed into the government last month, with associations claiming the service is illegal because it doesn't comply with rules which taxi drivers are subject to.

A court ruling last year obtained by main drivers' associations ANTRAL said Uber should stop its operations. However, the service has continued because it was allegedly filed against the wrong department. Endit
