Xinhua, May 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Skin cancer day was marked in Portugal on Wednesday with free check-ups at 44 dermatology centers.

The free checkups are organized by the Portuguese Association of Skin Cancer and up to 2,000 people will be checked up on Wednesday.

This month, 34 European countries mark skin cancer day to raise awareness about the condition.

Around 12,000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in Portugal every year.

The most common sign of skin cancer is a new mole or a change in an existing one, and exposure to ultraviolet light increases the risk of cells developing abnormally in the skin which can lead to cancer.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined. Endit
