The new Italian economic development minister, Carlo Calenda, took office on Tuesday, replacing his predecessor who quit over allegations of conflict of interest, the Italian presidential office said.
Calenda, 43, was sworn in by Italian President Sergio Mattarella here. Until Tuesday, he was Italy's permanent representative to the European Union (EU) and prior to that he was Italy's deputy economic development minister.
Calenda was also a member of the EU foreign affairs council which he chaired during the Italian presidency of the EU council in the second semester of 2014, and vice chair of the 10th World Trade Organization (WTO) ministerial conference at the end of last year.
Calenda replaces Federica Guidi who resigned on March 31 amid allegations of conflict of interest over her partner Gianluca Gemelli, who was reportedly being investigated for corruption conspiracy and claiming influence over a public official in order to obtain bribes. Endit
