Russian Climber found dead in Nepal: government official

A Russian climber who went missing in Nepal's Himalayas for one week, was found dead on Monday, a senior government official told local media.

Russian national Sargey Karnisov, 51, who descended with his seven-member team after successfully summiting the 6,091-metre high Pisang peak in Manang District of the Annapurna region, was gone missing since last Tuesday.

"The body was found in gorge of a rocky mountain. We are trying to recover the body," Chief District Officer of Manang District Bhim Kanta Sharma told local media.

A search and rescue was launched after he was reported missing last week. Torrential rain and snow had hampered the operation, he added.

Annapurna Region is one of the popular trekking destinations for foreigners in Western Nepal.

Local media reported last week that two trekkers from South Korea and Japan died of suspected altitude sickness on their way down from the base camp. Endit
