Slovak customs officers on Monday shot at tires of a vehicle that allegedly ignored order to stop and injured a female Syrian migrant onboard, a government spokesperson said.
The customs officers flagged down four cars full of migrants that entered Slovakia from Hungary in southern part of the country.
One of the vehicles allegedly refused to stop, prompting the authorities to open fire at its tires, during which the female migrant from Syria was hit.
"The driver of the car failed to acknowledge an order to stop, even after a warning shot was fired. The vehicle came to a stop only after the customs officials shot at its tires," Slovak Financial Directorate spokesperson Patricia Macikova said.
The female passenger was injured in the process, said Macikova.
The spokesperson said the arrested individuals were transferred into the custody of the National Unit for Combating Illegal Migration.
The 26-year-old woman is allegedly in stable condition after undergoing an operation in a hospital in Dunajska Streda, south Slovakia.
According to Tomas Kral, a spokesman of hospital network Svet Zdravia, the woman was admitted to the hospital with a bullet lodged in her back, which doctors successfully removed.
Kral said another two migrants received treatment as well and they were dehydrated. Endit
