Slovenian police detain terror suspect

Xinhua, May 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Slovenian young man charged with terrorism in Italy has been apprehended by Slovenian police, according to the Slovenian Press Agency (STA).

Rok Zavbi, a 26-year-old Slovenian national, was arrested on Friday by Slovenian police in an operation led by the Carabinieri, the Italian military police, the STA reported.

The next day, he was brought before an investigating judge at the Ljubljana District Court, who remanded him in custody. Zavbi's lawyer Lara Mikuz said she had appealed against the decision.

Zavbi has been described as a foreign fighter involved in international terrorism who was responsible for radicalising and recruiting extremists in Italy, Italy's Ansa news agency reported, citing officials.

According to police data, the STA said, Zavbi is not subject to any investigation on suspicion of terrorism in Slovenia.

The Slovenian police also stressed that it has "in the recent period not obtained relevant data suggesting any such criminal activity being committed or prepared on Slovenian territory." Endit
