Saudi soldier killed in exchange of fire with attackers

Xinhua, May 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Saudi Interior Ministry said on Sunday a soldier was killed in the exchange of fire with militants attempting to attack a police station in Taif city in Mecca, Saudi Press Agency reported.

According to the ministry's spokesperson, the attackers were noticed by the police when they were trying to sneak into the parking lot of a police station midnight Saturday.

The militants opened fire, and fled the scene in a car that was waiting for them, while a soldier was killed in the shooting, said the report.

The ministry also said that the troops found an explosive vest and bomb-making material in the mountain village of Thaqeef where they believe that the assailants are hiding.

Saudi Arabia has been coping with a series of deadly terrorist attacks orchestrated by Islamic State (IS) militant group, while the authorities said they have managed recently to foil a number of these plots. Enditem
