1st LD: Gunmen kill 8 policemen south of Egypt's capital

Xinhua, May 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Gunmen shot dead eight Egyptian policemen in Helwan district south of the Capital Cairo in the early morning, the interior ministry said Sunday.

Four assailants in a pickup truck intercepted the policemen, who were in a minivan patrolling the area, and showered them with automatic rifle fire, the ministry said.

The dead included a lieutenant, it added.

Anti-security attacks have escalated following the ouster of the Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the army in response to mass protest against his rule in 2013.

The Jihadists took from restive Sinai Peninsula a center for most of their operations, while the rest have crept to the capital and some other cities.

Hundreds of police and army men have been killed in the attacks.

Ansar Beit Al-Maqdes, an affiliate to the Islamic State in Sinai, has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks. Endit
