WFP provides logistical support to Ecuador's earthquake-hit areas

Xinhua, May 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) announced Friday that it is providing logistical support to Ecuador to ensure that food assistance and humanitarian aid reaches the quake-affected people.

The logistical support for the victims of the earthquake that struck last month, consists of the storage and airlifting of humanitarian aid, as well as dispatching staff to emergency situations, the UN agency said in a statement in the Ecuadoran capital.

The WFP has established logistical centers in Quito as well as in Manta and Pedernales in the western province of Manabi where the epicenter of the quake was located.

The quake has left 660 dead and nearly 29,000 people affected.

So far the WFP has provided food assistance to 105,000 victims and has organized shipments of humanitarian aid through its regional logistics center in Panama.

The WFP's partners have collaborated offering items such as blankets and kitchen equipment, among other things.

The WFP said that at the request of the Ecuadoran Defense Ministry, it has installed a facility in Portoviejo, the municipal capital of Manabi, to be used for humanitarian aid work for a period of three months. Endi
